Nonparametric estimation of mark's distribution of an exponential Shot-noise process
In this paper, we consider a nonlinear inverse problem occurring in nuclear
science. Gamma rays randomly hit a semiconductor detector which produces an
impulse response of electric current. Because the sampling period of the
measured current is larger than the mean inter arrival time of photons, the
impulse responses associated to different gamma rays can overlap: this
phenomenon is known as pileup. In this work, it is assumed that the impulse
response is an exponentially decaying function. We propose a novel method to
infer the distribution of gamma photon energies from the indirect measurements
obtained from the detector. This technique is based on a formula linking the
characteristic function of the photon density to a function involving the
characteristic function and its derivative of the observations. We establish
that our estimator converges to the mark density in uniform norm at a
logarithmic rate. A limited Monte-Carlo experiment is provided to support our
findings.Comment: Electronic Journal of Statistics, Institute of Mathematical

Linear Fractional Stable Sheets: wavelet expansion and sample path properties
In this paper we give a detailed description of the random wavelet series
representation of real-valued linear fractional stable sheet introduced in
Ayache, Roueff and Xiao (2007). By using this representation, in the case where
the sample paths are continuous, an anisotropic uniform and quasi-optimal
modulus of continuity of these paths is obtained as well as an upper bound for
their behavior at infinity and around the coordinate axes. The Hausdorff
dimensions of the range and graph of these stable random fields are then
derived
Dispersion Estimation From Linear Array Data in the Time-Frequency Plane
International audienceWe consider the problem of estimating the dispersion of a wave field from data recorded by a linear array of geophones. The fact that the data we are looking at may contain several propagating waves make this even more challenging. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to solve this issue. Currently, there are two methods for estimating wave dispersion described in the literature. The first method estimates the group delay function from the time-frequency representation (TFR) of each sensor separately. It is efficient as long as the patterns of the different waves do not overlap in the time-frequency plane. The second method estimates the dispersion from the two-dimensional (2-D) Fourier transform of the profile (or more generally from a velocity-frequency representation). This assumes that the dispersion is constant along the entire sensor array. It is efficient as long as the patterns of the waves do not overlap in the frequency domain. Our method can be thought of as a hybrid of the above two methods as it is based on the construction of a TFR where the energy of waves that propagate at a selected velocity are amplified. The primary advantage of our algorithm is the use of the velocity variable to separate the patterns of the propagating waves in the time-frequency plane. When applied to both synthetic and real data, this new algorithm gives much improved results when compared with other standard methods
Nonparametric inference of photon energy distribution from indirect measurements
International audienceWe consider a density estimation problem arising in nuclear physics. Gamma photons are impinging on a semiconductor detector, producing pulses of current. The integral of this pulse is equal to the total amount of charge created by the photon in the detector, which is linearly related to the photon energy. Because the inter-arrival of photons can be shorter than the charge collection time, pulses corresponding to different photons may overlap leading to a phenomenon known as pileup. The distortions on the photon energy spectrum estimate due to pileup become worse when the photon rate increases, making pileup correction techniques a must for high counting rate experiments. In this paper, we present a novel technique to correct pileup, which extends a method introduced in \cite{hall:park:2004} for the estimation of the service time from the busy period in M/G/ models. It is based on a novel formula linking the joint distribution of the energy and duration of the cluster of pulses and the distribution of the energy of the photons. We then assess the performance of this estimator by providing an expression of its integrated square error. A Monte-Carlo experiment is presented to illustrate on practical examples the benefits of the pileup correction
New estimation method of the dispersion from a linear array of sensors
The dispersion estimation is an important objective in seismic processing and near surface acquisition. We propose a
new algorithm, which performs the dispersion estimation from a linear array of geophones using time-frequency
properties. This estimation enables a robust characterization and extraction of dispersive propagating waves from a
seismic profile. In comparison with standard methods which are based either on the time-frequency representations of
each trace or on the velocity-frequency representation of the seismic image, our method can be seen as an hybrid
method since it proposes jointly a time-frequency-velocity representation. In this algorithm, the crucial step is the
model of the propagation by a simultaneous time delay and phase shift correction around each frequency. The main
advantage of our algorithm is that the gain in resolution leads to a more powerful tool to separate propagating waves.
A comparison between the presented algorithm and other standard methods is presented both on synthetic and real
